Common Issues in the Help With Life Forum

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 9, 2007, 7:02 PM

ATTENTION: This guide needs your help! What I need: general answers to common HWL problems, working websites and hotline numbers pertaining to the subjects listed below, and anything else you can think of. Simply comment on this journal to chat about it or help out.

Life

:bulletpurple: Boredome

Asking about this in HWL will not get you very far. The Deviants forum might be willing to help, and the Complaints forum can be downright thrilling. Considering this is an art community, working on something to submit is always a good idea. But when all of those things don't help, we turn to the internet for help.

      YouTube
All the videos you'll ever need, view them for free.
      Kill Some Time
Funny videos, pictures, flash games, and more.
      Art.com's ArtPad
Paint or doodle right in your web browser.
      Homestar Runner
No one can be bored with all those Strongbad emails.

:bulletpurple: Cheering Up

If you just need cheering up, we can usually help you there. Helpers -- post links to these people of funny or super cute deviations, and anything else you can think of. Here are some great sites for getting cheered up in no time. Unless you dislike cats, then I guess you're screwed. =P

      Boners.com - Not what you'd think
Hilarious pictures of mishaps and general silliness.
      Stuff on My Cat
      Felines. With things on them!
      Cats that Look like Hitler
      Otherwise known as Kitlers.
      Cats in Sinks
      Cats in Sinks
      Meme Cats
Cat pictures with hilarious, usually internet-related text.

:bulletpurple: Death

Whether it's death of a relative, friend, or pet, we can share our stories and give you some sympathy. If you have questions about death, here are some good sites.

      Gone from My Sight
A short journal about my own experience with death.
      HospiceNet
Answers about dying, death, and various issues in dealing with such.

Art Related

:bulletpurple: Great Art Clubs on dA

This is a list of active clubs here on DA that serve a wide amount of interests. If you're looking for very specialized clubs, I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere. These are a good starting point, though.

      *color-me-club
A line art club. Submit your line art or color the submissions!
      *UnseenArtists
A club for getting your art seen by more people. Very friendly community.
      *ColorfulArtClub
For viewing and sharing art with lots of color!

Love

:bulletpurple: Unrequited Love

If the girl or boy just plain doesn't like you or wants to be friends, there isn't much that we can do to help you, as we don't sell any love potions or perform hypnosis on the HWL forum. However, you can ask us to share our stories and give you some comfort, and we'll do our best.

      Agony and Rapture
A sarcastic guide to unrequited love. It won't help you much, but is funny.

:bulletpurple: Asking Him or Her Out

The biggest question we get is "Should I?" Yes. Why not? Go for it. That is the answer, unless there is something extremely wrong about you doing so... Best give us that little tidbit if you ask us about asking them out. You can ask us about techniques, but be sure to give us as much information as possible about the crush and yourself, or there's no way you can expect us to be of any help. The internet gives us some interesting sites about love.

      Love and Relationships
Analyze how you love, info about love through social psychology.
WikiHow's How to Ask a Girl Out
      Step-by-step instructions and tips.
WikiHow's How to Ask a Guy Out
      Same as above, for girls.

Death- Think of happy, cheerful moments you had with the person who died. Try to take your mind away from the death. Occupy yourself, it is very difficult to deal with a death as soon as it happens.

First timers - If you're not sure that you're ready, you probably aren't ready. If you have to ask on a forum whether you are ready for sex, the answer is most likely no. If you do decide to have sex, USE A CONDOM, PLEASE.

STDs- [link] [link] Get tested ASAP if you think you may have one, early detection is key.

Abortion- [link] 1-800-230-PLAN

Suicide- Don't do it. Nothing is worth taking your own life. If a friend is about to do it, don't leave them alone and GET HELP NOW. 1-800-273-TALK is a hotline for help.

Rape:- It is NEVER your fault that you got raped, regardless of whether you were dating the rapist, friends with the rapist, at a bar or a club, etc. Report it, immediately.

Sorry about the screwed up links.

Under STDs, its plannedparenthood.org and teenwire.org

Under abortion its plannedparenthood.org

Thanks a lot for your input. I am a little iffy about giving links to planned parenthood because I feel they are not honest enough about the emotional after affects of abortion. (Mind you, I am not against abortion, I just think that women should have the straight-up facts.) The other stuff is very good, though, thank you!

No prob. There's also prochoice.org for abortion and sexetc.org for STDs and first timers.

Sounds interesting.

Some things missing:

"Am I gay/lesbian" (or something like that) under love or sex. You might want a "family" "friends" section too, though honestly those aren't the most popular questions.

And a suggestion.... why don't you have some "volunteers" under each section where people can go to them for personal help away from the forums, like, through notes? If you take that idea you'd have to make sure who you're putting on are, well, helpful though.

(PS: This actually might make a good thing for a seperate account)

:iconetherealism:
Am I Gay/lesbian -- good point, I agree. What do you mean by "family" and "friends"? What specific common problems are associated with them? Keep in mind that there are some common issues in the HWL forum that cannot really be "summed up" usefully here (HELP GUYS I'M EMO! comes to mind).

I would not be able to maintain the guide nearly as easily with a second account, though I have given that some thought. The volunteers thing sounds worth considering, though I would have to do so much communication with the individuals that it will have to wait until I'm a little less busy (classes starting, requests and whatnot bogging me down -- plus the guide's not even totally finished yet).

Thanks a lot for your input! :w00t:

I would love to help out with this guide and I find HWL forum just awesome, I've read through a few threads and people are very genuine with their responses to helping people out and I was touched.

I can take a shot at the "Am I gay/lesbian," not only from experience because I am bisexual myself but I have many friends around me who have asked themselves that question or who have come to a decision and deal with family issues.

Some issues would be -

"Will my friends hate me if I'm bi/lesbian/gay"

"What will my parents think/how will they react?"

"Will I be shunned by people if they find out I'm gay/bi/lesbian?" (In this case, people would be strangers, not really ones close to them.)

"I'm (insert religion) but I think/am bi/lesbian/gay.. what do I do?"

I hope this helps!

:iconetherealism:
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've been thinking about it.

As I don't think there is a simple paragraph that can sum up the answer to most of those, I think what I'm going to do is just include a homosexuality section, and in it invite those with questions to ask those particular questions if they have them, and look for some links I can get with more elaborate answers.

Thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate any I can get!

I recently heard about a mass murderer who killed seventeen people in three days... they say he was a loner. Well, of course he was. He apparently killed everyone he came in contact with!
